The Shetland Boat: South Mainland and Fair Isle was originally published in 1984 following a number of research trips to Shetland by the author, Adrian Osler. Visiting Shetland in the early 1970s on a personal quest for information about the late, renowned model-maker and shipwright, John Shewan of Hay's Dock, the author became drawn into the island world of its boats. During occasional trips over succeeding years, he was privileged to meet members of a generation whose livelihoods had depended on the production and use of open boats as working tools, examining and recording select examples of these unique craft as they declined on the shore. This much sought after publication has been reprinted by Shetland Heritage Publications, in association with the National Maritime Museum to mark the occasion of the first Shetland Boat Week in August 2016.
