This fine looking man is my Great Grandfather, Robbie Irvine. This photo was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s. He is standing outside his croft house, at Sanshoull, on the island of Whalsay.
You can see a line of salt fish, probably small piltocks, drying behind him.
So, when we say we've been salting fish for generations...
